Read the story. Think about the four characters. Rank them from 1 to 4. Number 1 is the best person; number 4 is the worst person.

The Alligator River

Once upon a time, there was a woman named Julia. She loved a man named Greg. Greg lived on the shore of a river. Julia lived on the opposite shore. The river that separated the two sweethearts was filled with alligators.

Julia wanted to cross the river to be with Greg. Sadly, the bridge was broken during a flood. It was not possible to cross the river on the bridge. So she went to Sinbad, a riverboat captain, and asked him to take her across the river. He said he would take her across the river if she gave him the gold necklace she was wearing. This necklace once belonged to Greg’s grandmother. Greg had given it to Julia.

She refused and went to a friend named Ivan for help. Unfortunately, Ivan said he did not want to help her. Julia felt her only choice was to pay Sinbad. So, she gave him the necklace and he took her across the river in his boat. Julia told Greg about the necklace. Greg was very angry. He told Julia to leave and never return.
